Row Houses

Row houses are the cheap versions of terraced houses with the townhouses on the opposite and expensive end of the spectrum. Row houses are considered destined for the lower economic classes and those who can afford to shift out move into terraced houses. Row houses can be ideal for singles and for those newly-married couples who have no kids yet since the space can become cramped with all those furniture and other house accessories. There is also less privacy and seclusion afforded by a row house compared with other forms of dwellings. Since row houses were designed for the lower classes, it is inevitable that the type of people one will meet and associate might not be of the same cultural or educational background.

Typical House

In the United States, row houses were built mostly in highly-urbanized areas as a response to limited space and expensive real estate. Curiously, New York City and Boston City have developed their peculiar type of row house called as a “brownstone” because of the brown-coloured sandstone used as construction material. Former British colonies such as Malaysia and Singapore adopted the row house design only much later because space was plentiful then due to lower population densities. Typical Malaysian and Singaporean row houses have two floors with the ground used for commercial purposes such as shop houses. In both Asian countries, row houses are alternatively known as linear link-houses.
