Detached Houses

Finances permitting, most families would opt for a detached house for its privacy. In this type of dwelling, there are no nosy or noisy neighbours to contend with. The family can literally have the place entirely to themselves for peace and quiet. A detached house is a free-standing residential building built on a lot considerably larger in terms of area hence there are extra spaces all around it known as a yard in America and a garden in England.

Single detached homes are very common in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand with usually the requisite attached garage for the family car. In the older home designs of perhaps 50 years ago, the garage was constructed separately from the house itself and opens into an alley. New zoning laws favour today’s garage opening to a side street instead to minimize traffic congestion when going in or going out of it. These are the must-have rooms: bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room (also as a parlour). Optional features are: front room, dining room, family room, storage room and study room otherwise known as a home-office for the self-employed and the home-workers.
